What Factors Into the Cost of Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Every patient is different and the cost of oral surgery varies depending on many factors. These include:
- How many wisdom teeth you need extracted
- Your choice of anesthesia (most patients undergo IV sedation for this procedure)
- Additional procedures, such as bone grafting, other tooth extractions, or treatment for an impacted canine
- The extent of your surgery overall, including treatment for impacted wisdom teeth
During your first visit, you will meet with our surgeons and staff who will cover all of these topics and more. We will provide you with a cost estimate for your treatment and discuss your options for payment.
Risks of Leaving Wisdom Teeth Untreated
An impacted wisdom tooth will likely never successfully erupt on its own because there is simply not enough room for it in the dental arch. Dental professionals recommend having third molars removed as soon as possible to avoid a number of oral health issues, including:
- Shifting of other teeth caused by wisdom teeth pushing on them
- Infection, as a partially erupted tooth is difficult to clean around
- Cysts and tumors forming over the impacted tooth
- Development of bite problems
- Dental overcrowding
- Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease
Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure
At the consultation appointment, we will take 3D scans. These digital images are instantly viewable and show our team the exact size and position of the wisdom teeth. Then, we create your treatment plan and select the right anesthesia.
Most patients undergo IV sedation for this procedure. IV sedation puts you into a semi-conscious state where you will be unable to feel pain but able to answer questions asked by your surgeon. Local anesthesia is usually enough for simple extractions, but wisdom teeth are large and require special care from an oral surgeon. General anesthesia is reserved for very complex cases, such as corrective jaw surgery, in which the patient is rendered completely unconscious.
On the day of your wisdom teeth extraction, your surgeon will wait for the anesthesia to take effect and begin the surgery. He or she will remove visible wisdom teeth with forceps and break up impacted teeth into smaller pieces for easier removal. Dissolvable sutures will be placed on the gum tissue and you will rest until the anesthesia wears off. Many patients return to their normal routines several days following surgery.
