Jaw Surgery
If your bite doesn’t line up, your jaw causes you pain, or your facial features feel out of balance, jaw surgery can provide the correction you need.
At Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery, our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons use the most innovative surgical techniques and technology to correct jaw misalignment, improve function, and provide facial symmetry so you can breathe easier, chew better, and smile confidently.

Jaw Surgery to Correct the A-B-Cs
Corrective jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, places the upper jaw and lower jaw into the ideal position for function, aesthetics, and health.
Jaw misalignment, which can exist at birth or develop as a result of genetics, environmental influences, or trauma to the face, can cause airway limitations, bite problems, or facial asymmetry.
Our board-certified surgeons provide several types of corrective jaw surgery to correct the A-B-Cs:
A – Airway
Jaw surgery can shift the jaws forward to increase the airway space, improving breathing and relieving symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.
B – Bite
Surgical correction of crooked or misaligned bites, such as underbite, overbite, and openbite, can improve chewing and speaking function and relieve chronic facial pain.
C – Cosmetics
Jaw repositioning, including the correction of protruding or recessed chins, can create a more symmetrical and balanced facial profile, improving aesthetics and self-confidence.
Whether you need a minor alignment correction in conjunction with orthodontic treatment or an extensive double jaw surgery, our team will deliver the most effective and comprehensive treatments tailored to your individual needs.

Your Jaw Surgery Journey: What to Expect
Here’s what the path to a healthy bite typically looks like when undergoing corrective jaw surgery:
Initial Consultation
Meet with one of our highly experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons to discuss your concerns. During your consultation, we’ll gather your medical history, perform a physical examination, take photos, and use advanced diagnostic imaging techniques such as cone beam CT scans to gather the information needed for treatment planning.
Personalized Treatment Planning
Using the information from your consultation, your surgeon will determine treatment options that can achieve your goals. Our advanced virtual planning technology simulates the surgical procedure on your anatomy, so you can visualize a realistic expectation of the results of your surgery. Our insurance coordinators will partner with you on necessary authorizations and financial details.
Surgical Preparation
Our team will collaborate with your orthodontist to seamlessly coordinate care and ensure optimal alignment of the teeth, both pre- and post-operatively. Depending on your treatment plan, orthodontic treatment to prepare your mouth for surgery could take about a year.
Pre-Surgical Appointment
Once your teeth are optimally aligned and prepared for corrective jaw surgery, we will take new images and 3D scans to create a final composite model for moving the upper jaw, lower jaw, and possibly the chin into the ideal position. Using computer-generated facial models, you’ll get an updated look at your expected outcome based on your surgeon’s precise surgical plan. We will guide you through all the pre-operative instructions on medication management, dietary restrictions, and activity guidelines to prepare for your procedure and a smooth recovery.
Surgical Procedure
Surgery is performed in our comfortable AAAHC-accredited office-based surgical centers, or hospital services can also be arranged. Our anesthesia team administers general anesthesia so you are completely asleep, safe, and pain-free throughout your surgery. Procedures are typically completed in just a few hours, and most patients return to their home for recovery the same day.
Recovery and Follow-Up
Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions, nutritional guidance, and follow-up appointments to support healing and monitor your progress, and we are always just a phone call away with 24/7 access. You will experience facial swelling, bruising, and soreness that will subside within the first few weeks of your recovery, and pain medication will be prescribed along with an ice schedule to minimize your discomfort. Most patients return to work or school about 2–3 weeks after this life-changing surgery.
