Biography
Dr. Dammling was born and raised in Connecticut and completed his undergraduate degree in Healthcare Management at the University of Maryland. While an undergraduate student, he was able to shadow multiple surgeons, which led him to pursue his academic interests in medicine and dentistry.
Following graduation, he went on to attend dental school at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, where he graduated magna cum laude. As a dental student, Dr. Dammling presented research projects related to the treatment of osteoradionecrosis and maxillofacial infections. During this time, he also received multiple awards for his leadership within the Maryland State Dental Association and several national dental student organizations.
Inspired by his mentors and driven by a desire to expand his expertise, Dr. Dammling embarked on a six-year integrated medical degree and oral and maxillofacial surgery program at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. His performance and achievements in medical school led him to acceptance into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society.
Throughout his residency, Dr. Dammling underwent comprehensive training in a wide array of surgical procedures, including orthognathic surgery, facial trauma surgery, head and neck oncology, alveolar cleft bone grafting, and temporomandibular joint surgery. His dedication to advancing the field was evident in his research output, which included peer-reviewed articles and national-level presentations on orthognathic surgery planning, perioperative anesthesia management, and cleft palate management. Further, Dr. Dammling has written several book chapters on the use of prophylactic antibiotics in oral and maxillofacial surgery, sedation recommendations, and medical management of temporomandibular joint disorders.
During his fourth and fifth years of residency, Dr. Dammling served on multiple leadership committees for ACOMS, ROAAOMS, and was a House Staff delegate for UAB Hospital. In his final year of residency he served as Chief Resident. His training at UAB Hospital fueled his clinical interest in orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgery.
Following residency, he honed his skills further through a one-year fellowship at the Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery dedicated to corrective jaw surgery, full arch surgery, and temporomandibular joint surgery.
