Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common disorder characterized by abnormal reductions in breathing while an individual is asleep. Studies estimate that around 30 million Americans have sleep apnea, yet only approximately 6 million have been diagnosed due to the difficulty in recognizing nighttime symptoms. If you think you have sleep apnea, keep an eye out for these warning signs and symptoms:

  • Excessive fatigue and daytime drowsiness
  • Gasping for air during sleep
  • Waking up with a choking sensation
  • Loud snoring
  • Persistent headaches that last for hours after waking up
  • Awakening with a dry mouth
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Irritability or frustration
  • Reduced focus

The most definitive symptom is experiencing episodes where you stop breathing during sleep. Numerous factors contribute to sleep disorders, often related to a patient’s jaw structure. For this reason, anyone experiencing disordered sleep should consult an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS). Through surgical or non-surgical intervention, an OMS can identify and treat conditions like insomnia and sleep apnea, giving you back control over your life.

Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea

The first step towards sleep apnea treatment is recognizing your symptoms and visiting an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for a comprehensive evaluation. Once we confirm this condition, we can build you a customized sleep apnea treatment plan that may include lifestyle changes, a PAP (positive airway pressure) machine, oral appliances, and surgery.

Oral Appliances

Oral appliances help to reposition the jaws and stabilize the tongue to keep the airway open during sleep. You should try different devices before finding one that works for you. Once you find the right fit, follow-up appointments with your doctor are recommended during the first year, and then regular appointments are made to ensure that the fit is still ideal.

Positive Airway Pressure Machines

A Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) machine treats sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing issues by delivering airflow through a mask to help keep your airways open. There are various types of PAP machines; your doctor will recommend the best type for you.

Oral Surgery

If all other non-invasive treatment methods have failed, surgery may be necessary for sleep apnea. Depending on your circumstances, your doctor may recommend tissue removal, jaw repositioning, dental implants, tonsils removal, maxillomandibular advancement surgery or anterior inferior mandibular osteotomy.

Anesthesia Options for Sleep Apnea Treatment

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia provides numbness directly where it is administered. It does not affect consciousness, so the patient remains awake while the feelings of discomfort are eliminated. Local anesthesia is commonly used for minor procedures.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that the patient inhales to alleviate feelings of anxiety. It does not cause the patient to lose consciousness. It is often used together with local anesthesia.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is commonly used for moderate to extensive oral or facial surgery procedures. This type of sedation is administered directly into the patient’s vein. Since amnesia (forgetfulness) is a common side effect of the medication, most patients who use IV sedation do not remember their procedure.

What Our Patients are Saying

  • Super Friendly

My appointment was for fitting for a mandibular adjustment device for sleep apnea. Everyone was very helpful and was extremely familiar with navigating the world of insurance and prior authorization. Everyone was super friendly and they have a wonderful waiting area with coffee and beverages.

  • Grateful For Her Care!

Dr. Haigler does many initial tests and through this discovered I had sleep apnea and sent me to a sleep Dr. Eventually through testing and trial and error, I am sleeping restfully through the night without getting up to go to the restroom! She also has been proactive with my TMJ that developed from my Invisalign! Through the exercises and treatment she’s given me, it has subsided! So grateful for her care!

  • Absolute Awesome Job!

I am a fifty year old male who had severe sleep apnea. Dr. Howell performed upper and lower reconstructive jaw surgery on me to open my airway. Up until this point I had been on a CPAP machine and hated it. Long story short, Dr. Howell did an absolute awesome job with the surgery, opening my airway up tremendously. I have not used the CPAP machine since. I have an upcoming sleep study scheduled but I'm fairly confident the results will be good. I would recommend Dr. Howell to anyone who may fall into the same parameters that I did. The surgery is no picnic but my experience has not been too bad at all. Thanks for all your help doc.
