About Dr. Jay P. Thakkar

Jay P. Thakkar, DDS is an accomplished oral and maxillofacial surgeon with a passion for improving patients’ lives through innovative surgical procedures. Observing a young patient undergo orthognathic surgery that improved their everyday functions – such as breathing and eating – inspired him to pursue the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery with a desire to positively impact patients in similar ways.

Dr. Thakkar’s enthusiasm for the artistic and creative aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery is evident in his approach to patient care. He values mentorship and has published numerous articles and chapters in Dental Clinics of America, with research expertise that ranges from current paradigms in the management of peri-implantitis to orofacial pain syndromes and the management of orofacial diseases. He also values outreach, having participated in numerous international and domestic trips to provide oral surgical care to remote populations.

Dr. Thakkar’s versatility in various surgical methods allows him to provide personalized care and tailor treatment differently for each patient. Patients can expect a surgeon who values communication and education based on the latest research and technology. He is particularly passionate about orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, Botox/filler injections, dental implants, and third molar surgery.

Dr. Thakkar received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from North Carolina State University and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He completed his residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where he served as Chief Resident of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 2022-2023.

Dr. Thakkar has received numerous awards for his excellence in oral and maxillofacial surgery, including the Osteoscience Foundation Grant Winner (2022), Excellence in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (2022, 2023), and he was the resident with the highest score in OMSITE training examination at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. He believes that the most valuable lesson he has learned is that each patient is unique, and treatment must be tailored to their individual needs.

Outside of work, Dr. Thakkar enjoys hiking, exploring the outdoors, and traveling the world with his wife. He is most proud of the work he has done within the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, which includes his awards, published articles, book chapters, and outreach services.
