Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery Teams Up With the CMS District

In today's fast-paced environment, the importance of fostering community connections and health awareness among young athletes is paramount. We are partnering with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. This initiative not only seeks to enrich the experiences of student-athletes but also aims to provide vital education on oral health, which is often overlooked in athletic training. Through workshops, screenings, and outreach events, we are committed to empowering young athletes with the knowledge and resources they need for optimal health. By prioritizing these efforts, we are collectively shaping a future where youth can thrive both on and off the field, ensuring they lead healthier, more informed lives.

CMS Athletic Zone

The CMS Athletic Zone acts as an essential hub for students, parents, and athletes, providing comprehensive resources and support related to athletics. It offers important information on eligibility requirements, participation fees, schedules for games and practices, and school sports policies, ensuring that everyone involved is well-informed and prepared for a successful athletic experience. Each year, students grades 7-12 engage in various sports through CMS, underscoring the district's commitment to fostering physical and emotional well-being. Participation in athletics instills essential life lessons, develops social and physical skills, and builds school spirit—elements that contribute significantly to a student’s overall development. Within this vibrant athletic landscape, we found an opportunity to make a lasting impact, through supporting these students and their futures.

Our Goal

At our core, CCOFS is dedicated to providing exceptional care in oral and maxillofacial surgery, specializing in procedures like wisdom teeth removal, jaw surgery, TMJ disorder treatments, and much more. However, our mission goes beyond surgical procedures; it highlights the importance of fostering community connections and actively engaging with youth and young athletes through its program. By partnering with CMS, we are stepping into a critical role in the community, shaping the well-being of the youth who will lead the next generation.

CCOFS & CMS

CCOFS aims to educate young athletes about the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene, helping them understand its long-term benefits. Healthy teeth and gums can enhance athletic performance, and educating students about injury prevention during sports fosters a culture of safety. Additionally, a healthy smile boosts confidence, encouraging athletes to engage more fully both in sports and academics.

One of the most impactful aspects of the CCOFS and CMS partnership is the trust it establishes within the community. When students see healthcare professionals actively engaging with their schools, it breaks down barriers, making healthcare feel accessible and less intimidating. This relationship cultivates a culture of health awareness, helping students understand that oral care is a vital part of their daily routine. By emphasizing preventative care, we guide students to seek help before issues escalate into more significant problems, instilling lifelong habits for better health.

The collaboration between CCOFS and CMS serves as an inspiring model of how healthcare and education can intertwine to promote better health outcomes. Together, we are shaping a community where youth are educated, supported, and empowered to prioritize their health, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.

Protect Your Smile

PROTECT YOUR TEETH

Wearing a mouthguard is your first line of defense against dental injuries while playing sports. Ensure it fits snugly and covers all teeth. Custom-fitted mouthguards offer a higher level of protection and comfort.

PREVENT TRAUMA

In high-contact sports, wearing a helmet with a jaw protector can minimize the risk of jaw injuries and provide extra protection while participating in sports activities.

PREVENT DEHYDRATION

Stay hydrated before, during, and after sports activities. Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps, fatigue, and impaired performance. Encourage drinking water regularly, especially in hot weather.

REDUCE INJURY RISK

Always start with a proper warm-up to prepare muscles and joints for activity. Similarly, end with a cool-down routine to help prevent muscle soreness and injuries.

REST AND RECOVERY

Give your body time to rest between practices and games. Overtraining can lead to fatigue and an increased risk of injury.

WHAT TO DO IF A TOOTH GETS KNOCKED OUT

  1.  Hold the tooth by its crown (the part that’s usually visible in the mouth), avoiding touching the root.
  2. If dirty, rinse the tooth with milk or saline solution. Do not scrub or use soap.
  3. If possible, try to put the tooth back into its socket gently, facing the right way.
  4. If that isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or saliva. Avoid water.
  5. Contact our practice immediately for emergency care. Time is crucial in saving a knocked-out tooth.

DON'T IGNORE PAIN

Pay attention to any pain or discomfort during sports activities. Continuing to play through pain can exacerbate injuries. If you experience pain, take a break and seek appropriate medical attention if needed.
