TMJ disorders can cause soreness, tenderness, and discomfort in the joints surrounding your jaw, along with the surrounding muscles and ligaments. These symptoms can lead to persistent discomfort and also make it more difficult to chew, swallow, or speak. The good news about TMJ disorders is that they are usually treatable. At Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery, we are pleased to provide both surgical and non-surgical interventions, supporting long-lasting TMJ relief. We invite you to contact us for a consultation to learn more about the different treatment options.

Treatment Options for TMJ

When you join us for an initial consultation, your surgeon will carefully evaluate your teeth and jaws, confirm your TMJ diagnosis, and recommend treatment options. Treatment protocols can vary from one patient to the next, depending on the severity of TMJ symptoms.

Some of the most common treatments include:

Medications

Several over-the-counter pain relievers, including steroids, can reduce the symptoms of TMJ. Muscle relaxers and even antidepressants can also be effective, particularly among patients whose TMJ symptoms are rooted in bruxism (tooth grinding and jaw clenching).

Injectables

Some patients find relief through injectable medications, including BOTOX®. BOTOX works by relaxing underlying muscles, which can ease some of the tension you feel in your jaw.

Mouth Guards

For patients whose TMJ symptoms are connected to bruxism, one simple solution is to try wearing a mouthguard, also referred to as a splint, at night. This can not only reduce TMJ symptoms but also help minimize wear and tear on the teeth, a common TMJ side effect.

Stress Reduction

Sometimes, simple lifestyle interventions, such as coping with stress in more meaningful ways, can greatly reduce TMJ symptoms. Meditation, mindfulness, and good ergonomics can all be important ways to curtail TMJ discomfort.

Surgery

When a jawbone deformity results in TMJ symptoms, the best remedy is often surgery. Surgical intervention can help restructure the bone, providing long-term relief from TMJ symptoms.

Are There Ways to Prevent TMJ?

If you are concerned about TMJ or wish to keep your symptoms from worsening over time, there are several preventative steps worth pursuing. Some examples include:

  • Wearing a mouthguard, also referred to as a splint, at night and while playing sports.
  • Engaging in regular relaxation techniques, such as mindfulness and meditation.
  • Practicing good posture throughout the day.
  • Talking with your doctor about medications you might try.
