Every year, Carolinas Centers for Oral & Facial Surgery accepts two oral and maxillofacial surgeons for advanced training in major reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, orthognathic surgery, TMJ and full-arch dental implants. They will have extensive exposure and advanced clinical training in:

  • Orthognathic surgery
  • Temporomandibular joint surgery
  • Major bone grafting with subsequent implant reconstruction

They will also have additional exposure in cleft and cosmetic procedures.

To be selected for this position, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon must:

  • Obtain an unrestricted North Carolina dental license or North Carolina medical license
  • Obtain hospital privileges
  • Be available from July 1–June 30 each year

The candidates will have extensive exposure to consultations, diagnosis, interdisciplinary treatment planning, and treatment and management of patients. It is expected that the candidates will be involved with several hundred cases. The candidates will also be expected to take some calls at local hospitals and perform various other functions related to oral surgery.

Carolinas Centers for Oral & Surgery is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is accredited by AAAHC. Carolinas Centers for Oral & Facial Surgery has multiple locations in the Carolinas and OR suites at six locations. The surgeons are well published and several lecture nationally in several areas of the OMS specialty.

Fellowship Alumni

MATTHEW DAILEY, DDS, MD

2023 – 2024

Dr. Dailey was born and raised in Southern California. He completed his undergraduate studies at U.C. Santa Barbara. He graduated with high honors  with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Developmental Biology. As an undergraduate student he was exposed to orthognathic surgery which led him to pursue a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery. 

Dr. Dailey then attended U.C. Los Angeles School of Dentistry where he received his D.D.S. At U.C. Los Angeles he was awarded the Health Professions Scholarship with the U.S Air Force. He subsequently completed a 1-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Bolling/Andrews Air Force Base in D.C. He served an additional three years as a general dentist with the 92nd Medical Group at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, WA.

After his honorable discharge, he moved his family to Pittsburgh, PA to complete a 6-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Here he obtained his M.D., followed his passion for orthognathic surgery, and participated in and published on facial nerve regeneration research. Dr. Dailey received a resident research grant through Osteo Science for his research utilizing dental pulp stem cells to fabricate scaffold free nerve conduits.   

Dr. Dailey’s interest in optimizing multidisciplinary care for orthognathic surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and dental implant therapy naturally led him to pursue a fellowship with the Carolinas Center for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic, and Dental Implant Surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Dailey enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his wife and family.


CHAD DAMMLING, DDS, MD

2023 – 2024

Dr. Dammling was born and raised in Connecticut and completed his undergraduate degree in Healthcare Management at the University of Maryland. He then went on to attend dental school at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry where he graduated magna cum laude. As a dental student, Dr. Dammling presented on research projects related to the treatment of osteoradionecrosis and maxillofacial hardware infections.

During this time, he also received multiple awards for his leadership within the Maryland State Dental Association and several national dental student organizations.

As a result of his strong mentorship while in dental school, he decided to move forward with a six- year integrated MD and oral and maxillofacial surgery program at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Following medical school, Dr. Dammling was elected the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society. During his time in residency, he received full scope training on orthognathic surgery, facial trauma surgery, head and neck oncology, alveolar cleft bone grafting, and temporomandibular joint surgery. Throughout his residency he authored multiple peer reviewed articles and presented at the national level on orthognathic surgery planning, perioperative anesthesia management, and external distraction devices on cleft palate patients. Further, Dr. Dammling has written several book chapters on the use of prophylactic antibiotics in oral and maxillofacial surgery, sedation recommendations for patients with neurological disorders, and medical management of temporomandibular joint disorders. During his fourth and fifth years of residency, Dr. Dammling served on multiple leadership committees for ACOMS, ROAAOMS and was a House Staff delegate for UAB Hospital. 

His training at UAB Hospital led to an interest to pursue fellowship training at the Carolinas Center for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic, and Dental Implant Surgery. In his spare time, Dr. Dammling enjoys golfing, running, and reading. 


KIMIKO AGARI, DDS, MD

2022 – 2023

Dr. Agari was born and raised in Stockton, California. There she completed her undergraduate studies, participating in University of the Pacific’s Pre-Dental Advantage Program and graduating summa cum lade. She then moved to San Francisco, where she completed her dental training at University of California, San Francisco. It was there that she first became interested in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the strong mentorship, research, and shadowing she was exposed to at UCSF led her to pursue the specialty.

After dental school, Dr. Agari moved to sunny Los Angeles for a 6-year integrated MD and oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at University of Southern California. During her time there, she participated in clinical research on dental implants and craniofacial surgery, presenting at multiple conferences and receiving awards for her research. Her surgical training in residency helped her develop an interest in various aspects of oral surgery including orthognathic surgery, facial trauma surgery, benign head and neck pathology and reconstruction, and dentoalveolar surgery. This, as well as her passion for education, mentorship, and research, inspired her to pursue fellowship training at Carolinas Center for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic, and Dental Implant Surgery. 


ROMEO LUO, DMD

2022 – 2023

Dr. Luo was born and raised in Beijing, China. He then came to the United States at the age of 5 with his father where they first settled in Southern Illinois and eventually in South Florida. It was there that he attended Florida Atlantic University, graduating summa cum laudewith a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then went on to attend dental school in Philadelphia, PA at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and completed his training summa cum laude with his Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD). While in dental school, he pursued research focusing on dental radiology and cone-beam computed tomography while dedicating his time to giving back to the Philadelphia community, earning him an Honors in Community Health. 

After dental school Dr. Luo returned to sunny South Florida to pursue his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Broward Health Medical Center and Nova Southeastern University. There, he received exposure and training in the full scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with emphasis on trauma and pathology. During his residency is when he discovered his love for orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgery and thus sought fellowship with Carolinas Center for Oral and Facial Surgery to further his training. 

In his spare time, Dr. Luo enjoys playing basketball, working out, and discovering new restaurants. 


MICHELLE ZOCCOLILLO, DDS, MD

2021 – 2022

Dr. Zoccolillo was born and raised in Syracuse, NY. Here, she attended Le Moyne College and graduated cum laude with Thesis Honors in Biology. She stayed in Upstate New York to complete her dental training at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine where she completed another Thesis Honors project in Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy and graduated magna cum laude in 2015. Throughout these years, she presented at multiple conferences and received many awards for her research.

Her interest in oral surgery began while shadowing her oral surgeon prior to dental school but continued to grow exponentially throughout her time at UB. She matched at her first choice for oral and maxillofacial residency, Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Here, she completed the 6 year residency program where she received her MD from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. This diverse and busy program allowed her to cultivate her passion for orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgery. This passion led to her decision to pursue the fellowship at CCOFS.

In her free time, she likes to dance, travel, explore the outdoors, and discover new music.


MICHAEL COURTNEY, DMD, MD

2021 – 2022

Dr. Courtney is a Massachusetts native, raised in a family of dentists and periodontists, including those in his immediate and extended family. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Boston University and thereafter attended Boston University’s School of Dental Medicine, where he received his DMD. While in dental school, Dr. Courtney participated in numerous research opportunities, including contributions to substantive publications focused on the success and viability of dental implants in medically compromised patients and studies concerning salivary gland pathology.

Thereafter, from 2012 to 2018, Dr. Courtney completed a 6-year integrated oral and maxillofacial surgery program with the Thomas Jefferson University Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, where he received his MD and completed substantial surgical training.

During residency, Dr. Courtney engaged in significant research programs, including participation at the SLEEP conference where he promoted studies concerning management of obstructive sleep apnea. He also conducted interdepartmental lectures within the university hospital. Dr. Courtney continues to lecture within the dental community on sleep apnea to update current dental and medical professionals on management and treatment options. He endeavors to continue his career in an academic setting with a focus on orthognathic surgery, trauma, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and obstructive sleep apnea, which has sparked his desire for a fellowship with Carolinas Center for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery.


WENDALL MASCARENHAS, DDS

2020 – 2021

Dr. Mascarenhas completed his dental training at the University of Western Ontario after attending York University for undergraduate studies in his hometown of Toronto, Canada. During his time at Western, he received 12 academic awards, including the Gold Medal for graduating first in his class. He then completed a 1-year General Practice Residency at Western and set his sights on a career in OMFS.

Dr. Mascarenhas attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he completed a combined OMFS-MD 6-year program. Under the guidance of a diverse range of staff, he encountered and operated on cases involving facial trauma, orthognathic surgery, head and neck oncology, alveolar cleft bone grafting, and temporomandibular joint disorders. It was during his residency that his interest in facial trauma and orthognathic surgery piqued, resulting in his desire to pursue a fellowship at Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery.

Dr. Mascarenhas is well known for his educational research projects CTRead and MRRead, which were inspired by his passion for teaching and something he hopes to continue through a career in education after the fellowship. In his free time, Dr. Mascarenhas enjoys playing sports (soccer, hockey, and any other sport that involves competition), exploring new dining experiences, and spending time with his wife and family.


ADAM FAGIN, DMD

2020 – 2021

Dr. Adam Fagin was born and raised in Palo Alto, California. At the age of 10, he used his burgeoning business acumen to negotiate a lucrative opportunity cleaning operatories in his father’s oral and maxillofacial surgery practice for two dollars an hour. While he would later renegotiate his wages, he held this summer position until 2010 when he graduated summa cum laude from Carleton College. He then moved to Boston to attend the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, determined to pursue a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery. At Harvard, he would cultivate a passion for research under the tutelage of Dr. Thomas Dodson. In 2014, he graduated cum laude from Harvard and was awarded for his research accomplishments during his time as a dental student.

He then returned to the West Coast for residency at Oregon Health and Science University. While in residency, he continued his exploration into academic surgery and published in oral and maxillofacial oncology, reconstruction, trauma, and education. His true passion lay in educational research, where his novel studies earned several awards at national meetings. In Oregon he met his future wife, who managed to complete both dental school and an orthodontic residency while he toiled tirelessly as a surgical resident. They hoped to be married by the time he started fellowship, but their ceremony was delayed due to the global pandemic. By the end of residency, he recognized that being a leader in the field meant pursuing a fellowship and counted himself lucky to follow in the footsteps of former OHSU graduates: Sam Bobek, Phillip Kupfer, and Peter Dennis as the 14th fellow at Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery. After fellowship, Dr. Fagin is determined to combine his passion for research, education, and patient care in his future practice.


PETER DENNIS, DMD, MD

2019 – 2020

Dr. Dennis was born and raised in Longview, WA, in a rural setting along the Columbia River. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and sports when not engaged in headlocks with his older and younger brothers. Following high school, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where he obtained a degree in biochemistry. Looking for a change of scenery, he moved to Boston where he attended the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Before graduating cum laude with his DMD, he performed and presented research on craniosynostosis syndromes. Dr. Dennis also happened to meet his future wife, Dr. Lauren Manning, in Boston while she completed her prosthodontic residency.

Following dental school, Dr. Dennis returned to the Pacific Northwest to attend oral and maxillofacial residency at Oregon Health & Science University. Under the tutelage of surgeons at OHSU, Head & Neck Surgical Associates, and previous Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery fellow Dr. Sam Bobek, his interest in orthognathic surgery continued to grow. During residency, Dr. Dennis performed research in the fields of oncology, reconstruction, and trauma, presenting at the national level. In his free time, Dr. Dennis enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and their goldendoodle puppy, Bailey.


ANDREW HENRY, DMD, MD

2018 – 2019

Dr. Andrew Henry attended the University of Dayton, where he received his BS in Exercise Physiology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Business Administration. He then attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was awarded the Theodore Blum Award for Excellence in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Staying in Philadelphia, he continued his training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania/Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he received his medical degree and completed additional anesthesia and general surgery training. During his residency training, he co-authored book chapters, journal articles, and presented research posters and lectured at several meetings across the country.


PHILIPP KUPFER, DMD, MD

2017 – 2018

Philipp Kupfer, DMD, MD, is a third-generation dentist. Dr. Kupfer was born and raised in Germany, where his father still practices General Dentistry. He met his wife, Rachel, during a high school exchange program and immigrated to the United States in 2001 to attend Concordia University in Portland, Oregon.

Upon graduation from Concordia, Dr. Kupfer continued his training at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland followed by Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA. At Harvard, Dr. Kupfer developed an interest in business and leadership in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. While attending Dental school, he completed a managerial internship at Straumann USA.

His continuing focus in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery brought Dr. Kupfer back to Portland again to attend Oregon Health & Science University from 2011 to 2017. There, in conjunction with the Head and Neck Surgical Group at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, he developed a special interest in Orthognathic Surgery, Virtual Surgical Planning, and the application of Advanced Imaging.

During his Residency, Dr. Kupfer served on the MEDPRO Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Resident Advisory Board and was given the privilege to become a reviewer for the German Journal, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

In 2018, Dr. Kupfer finished a Fellowship at the Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Brian Farrell and his partners. Dr. Kupfer participates in hundreds of complex orthognathic and reconstructive surgeries, dentoalveolar surgeries, and wisdom teeth removals. The fellowship program also focused on temporomandibular joint surgery and major bone grafting with subsequent implant reconstruction. After completing his Fellowship, Dr. Kupfer returned to Portland, OR, to join Sunset Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Kupfer has published both articles and book chapters in the fields of Orthognathic Surgery, Facial Trauma, Advanced Imaging, Cleft Care and the associated cost, as well as virtual surgical planning.

During his free time, Dr. Kupfer enjoys spending time with his loving wife and three children. They enjoy skiing/snowboarding, biking, water sports, good food and spending time with friends or family.


JIM HOWELL, DMD

2016 – 2017

Dr. Howell earned his Business degree with an emphasis in Marketing from Clemson University in 2002. In 2007, he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine. As a general dentist for 2 years, he also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Florida’s College of Dental Medicine.

In 2009, he returned to MUSC for his oral and maxillofacial residency. His career took him to Anchorage, Alaska, where he held teaching appointments and headed residency programs. He still holds an oral surgeon appointment with the pediatric dental program as part of NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine’s partnership with the Alaska Native Medical Center.

A passion for his hometown brought him back to Greenville as head of Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery’s Greenville office.


JOHN WESSEL, DMD, MD

2015 – 2016

Dr. John Wessel is a fellowship-trained Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, completing his training in Charlotte, North Carolina, under the mentorship of Drs. Brian Farrell and Myron Tucker.

After obtaining his doctoral degrees from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and New Jersey Medical School, he devoted 1 year focusing on advanced orthognathic and TMJ surgery. Dr. Wessel is able to comprehensively evaluate the facial skeleton to correct dentofacial deformities. He is passionate about the powerful changes corrective jaw surgery can provide—changes in opening the airway, providing optimal occlusion, and improving facial esthetics.

Dr. Wessel brings wide ranging experience to Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery, with surgical interests including the treatment of impacted wisdom teeth, replacing missing or broken teeth with dental implants, jaw misalignment, obstructive sleep apnea, TMJ dysfunction, and facial trauma. Dr. Wessel enjoys operating with cutting edge technology to achieve the best results possible through the use of virtual surgical planning and medical modeling to perform the planned surgery on a computer prior to the actual operation. Dr. Wessel will be lecturing on a national platform for his technique for genioglossus advancement—a technique used to open the airway for Obstructive Sleep Apnea patients.


PETER FRANCO, DMD

2014 – 2015

Hailing from the Empire State, Dr. Peter Franco is a third generation doctor in his family. Dr. Franco earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, where he received The Rev. Robert D. Cloney, S.J. Memorial Award which is given annually to one outstanding graduating Chemistry major. He went on to attend Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Franco finished TUSDM at the top of his class after receiving numerous awards and scholarships and taking honored courses including Dean’s List for academic achievement on the National Boards and the Thomas B. Hunt Endowed Scholarship for continued outstanding academic performance.

After graduation, Dr. Franco returned to New York City for his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the prestigious New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center program. During his residency he was trained in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery including dentoalveolar surgery (wisdom teeth extractions and comprehensive dental implant placement), head and neck pathology and reconstruction, bone grafting and orthognathic surgery. After his residency, Dr. Franco completed a fellowship at Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery under Drs. Brian Farrell and Myron Tucker participating in hundreds of complex orthognathic and reconstructive surgeries. It was during his fellowship year that he and his wife fell in love with the Carolinas.


MEGAN ROBL, DDS, MD

2013 – 2014

Dr. Megan Robl completed both her undergraduate degree and dental education through a six-year combined BA/DDS Program at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Subsequently, she went on to a General Practice Residency at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, where her interests in pursuing an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency continued to evolve.

She was then accepted into the six-year Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Program at Detroit Receiving Hospital. It was in Detroit, at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, that she received her Medical Degree. Nearing the end of her residency in Detroit, she sought the opportunity to further her education and gain additional training in Orthognathic Surgery, one of her primary interests throughout her residency program. The fellowship at Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery allowed her this chance and was a very valuable educational opportunity and experience. Currently, Megan resides and practices in San Antonio, Texas.


CHRISTOPHER CHOI, DDS, MD, FACS

2012 – 2013

Dr. Christopher Choi is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. A native New Yorker, he graduated from Columbia School of Dental Medicine and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. He also completed medical school at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and general surgery at North Shore University Hospital.

Dr. Choi currently practices at Inland Empire Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in southern California. He holds a faculty position at Loma Linda Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where he teaches and works with residents in training.


SAMUEL BOBEK, DMD, MD

2011 – 2012

Dr. Bobek is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial Surgeon at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He received his dental and medical degrees from Oregon Health & Science University. He also completed his General Surgery Internship and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Oregon Health & Science University.

After completing a fellowship in orthognathic and temporomandibular joint surgery at the Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery, Dr. Bobek practiced broad scope oral and maxillofacial surgery in Portland Oregon. In 2014, Dr. Bobek opened a new clinic at Swedish First Hill, where his hospital-based practice focuses on orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea, management of head and neck benign pathology, and trigeminal nerve repair.

Dr. Bobek has authored multiple publications in peer-reviewed literature, book chapters, and lectured nationally and internationally. His wife Lesley is a telemedicine hospitalist in the Providence Health System, and they have three sons.


TRAVIS KERN, DDS, MD

2010 – 2011

Dr. Kern attended the University of Texas for his MD and DDS between 2000 and 2007, graduating magna cum laude for his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He went on to work as a fellow in 2010 for Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery, specializing in orthognathic and reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Kern currently practices at Austin Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Austin, TX.


CRAIG NORBUTT, DDS, MD

2009 – 2010

Dr. Norbutt attended John Carroll University for undergraduate studies. He attended both dental & medical school at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA. His residency was completed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Norbutt is presently at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign, IL.


ERIK REITTER, DDS

2008 – 2009

Dr. Erik Reitter is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is a graduate of Marquette University’s School of Dentistry, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery. His surgery internship took place at Jackson Memorial Hospital and residency at the University of Florida at Shands Jacksonville.

At Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery, Dr. Reitter completed an extensive fellowship training focusing on TMJ/facial pain treatments.


MATTHEW E. DUDZIAK, DDS, MD

2007 – 2008

Dr. Matthew Dudziak attended University of California at Riverside and following graduation he attended New York University College of Dentistry. After earning his DDS degree, Dr. Dudziak completed his medical school, an entire year of General Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at the Louisiana State University in New Orleans.

Following the completion of his residency in 2006, he completed his fellowship in Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2007. Prior to entering private practice in 2008, Dr. Dudziak was the inaugural fellow for the Carolinas Centers for Oral, Facial, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Surgery.

Dr. Dudziak is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Residency and both fellowships provided extensive training and exposure to all facets of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
