How Zygomatic Implants Can Help You

Have you been denied traditional implants due to significant bone loss in your upper jaw? Explore the option of advanced zygomatic implants for restoring your smile and improving the functionality of your teeth. Zygomatic implants are innovative dental implants designed to replace teeth in the upper jaw when you have suffered severe bone loss. These types of implants are slightly tilted and much longer than traditional dental implants. They also anchor to the cheekbone, known as the zygoma, instead of embedding into the jawbone. This anchoring technique makes them ideal for replacing missing or failing teeth when there is considerable bone loss—the zygoma is made up of very dense bone and provides ample support for implants.

Benefits of Zygomatic Implants

Same Day Smile Results:

A key benefit of zygomatic implants is their ability to deliver immediate function and aesthetic results. Unlike traditional implants, which often require months of healing before prosthetic placement, zygomatic implants can typically support a temporary prosthesis soon after surgery. This streamlined process shortens treatment time and improves patient satisfaction.

Ideal for Patients with Severe Bone Loss

Zygomatic implants are especially beneficial for patients with significant bone loss caused by advanced periodontal disease, trauma, or congenital conditions. By securely anchoring the implant to the robust zygomatic bone, these implants offer a stable foundation for dental rehabilitation, often making complex bone augmentation procedures unnecessary. Zygomatic implants can be life-changing for patients who believe there isn’t a permanent solution for restoring their smiles and regaining their quality of life

Ideal Candidates

At Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery, we recommend zygomatic implants if you:

  • Have been denied dental implants due to significant bone loss in the upper jaw
  • Have difficulty keeping your dentures in due to bone loss in the jaw
  • Struggle to eat, chew effectively, and talk due to missing or failing teeth
  • Previous failed implant procedures

Zygomatic implants give you another chance to revitalize your smile and improve your quality of life, even after significant bone loss in the upper jaw.

What Our Patients are Saying

  • I Couldn't Be More Pleased

Great, friendly, and caring staff. Dr. Tankersley is fantastic. She is very skilled. She quickly removed a tooth my dentist and her partner struggled with for over 45 minutes. Another extraction recently and then two implants. I couldn't be more pleased.

The Zygomatic Implant Journey: From Consult to Recovery

  1. During your initial consultation, we will perform three-dimensional scans of your jaw to assess your needs. To create a personalized treatment plan, we’ll also ask questions about your goals, medical history, medications, and concerns. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss any questions about zygomatic implants, the surgery, or the costs to ensure you feel comfortable with your treatment plan.

  2. Your doctor will provide pre-operative instructions before surgery. We recommend that you follow these instructions closely, as they help encourage a smooth surgery and foster optimal healing during recovery.

  3. On the day of surgery, your oral and maxillofacial surgeon will administer local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, or IV sedation to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Then, your surgeon will perform a tooth extraction if this is part of your treatment plan.

  4. The surgeon will anchor the zygomatic implants in your cheekbone (the zygoma) to achieve maximum stability. This technique provides a solid foundation for a full upper arch bridge, delivering a beautifully restored smile.

  5. Once the implants are placed and the surgeon attaches the abutments, the full arch fixed prosthesis will be placed.

Recovery and Aftercare

On the day of surgery, you can expect mild discomfort as the anesthesia wears off, as well as some swelling, tenderness, and bruising in the treated area. To minimize discomfort and swelling, we recommend applying ice compressions for the first couple of days following your procedure. While you may feel nauseous, you can resume eating soft foods such as oatmeal, pudding, and eggs. Additionally, make sure you drink plenty of fluids.

In the three to five days following your zygomatic implant surgery, you may experience increased swelling and bruising as your jaw continues to heal, but this should resolve around day five.

Depending on your recovery rate, your doctor may recommend eating soft foods for a few weeks to three months after your surgery. However, your doctor will provide personalized recovery and aftercare instructions for optimal healing and recovery.

Anesthesia Options for a Comfortable Procedure

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia induces numbness in the specific area where it is applied. It does not interfere with the patient’s awareness, allowing them to stay awake while alleviating any sensations of discomfort. This type of anesthesia is frequently utilized for many types of minor medical procedures.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is a gentle sedative that patients inhale to help reduce anxiety. It does not induce unconsciousness and is frequently used in conjunction with local anesthesia.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is frequently utilized for moderate to extensive surgical procedures involving the mouth or face. This sedation method is delivered directly into the patient’s bloodstream. A common side effect of the medication is amnesia, meaning that many patients don’t recall their procedure afterward.
