Your Path to a Healthy Bite: The Corrective Jaw Surgery Process

Initial Consultation

During your consultation, you and your doctor will discuss your jaw issues and treatment goals, review your medical history, perform an oral evaluation, and take necessary imaging to create a treatment plan.

This is also a good time to discuss your concerns about the procedure, including risks, benefits, alternatives, and costs. Overall, expect your initial consultation for corrective jaw surgery to take about two hours.

Personalized Treatment

We work with your orthodontist to create a personalized treatment plan that helps you achieve your overall goals. Once we finalize your treatment, our practice will contact your insurance provider to obtain authorization and discuss the financial details with you.

Depending on your treatment plan, aligning your teeth with braces or retainers may be necessary to prepare your mouth for surgery. When your orthodontist gives you the all-clear, we will schedule a return visit and set a date for your surgical procedure.

Pre-Surgical Appointment

Once your teeth are optimally aligned and prepared for corrective jaw surgery, it is time to schedule your pre-surgical appointment. At this visit, our team will take comprehensive facial X-rays and use state-of-the-art computer video imaging to create a virtual model of your teeth and facial skeleton.

Computerized treatment planning minimizes treatment times, decreases your recovery period, and improves your surgery’s overall efficacy and accuracy. With this advanced technology, we can show you in great detail how your jaw will be improved and even give you an idea of how you’ll look after surgery.

Surgery Day

Your surgery will occur at our accredited surgery center. We will put you under anesthesia, which maximizes your safety and comfort during the procedure.

After administering anesthesia, your surgeon will reposition your jaw to suit your needs. Depending on your treatment plan, your doctor can add, reshape, or remove the bone. Your surgeon may also use screws, surgical plates, rubber bands, and wires to secure your jaws in their new locations. In most cases, incisions are made inside your mouth to reduce noticeable scarring.

Recovery

Following your corrective jaw surgery, you will likely experience facial swelling, bruising, and soreness. Facial swelling will peak around day two or three and continue to subside within the first few weeks of your recovery. To minimize the swelling, we recommend you apply ice packs in intervals of twenty minutes on and off and keep your head elevated. To help with any discomfort, your doctor will prescribe you pain medication.  You can expect your discomfort to improve with each passing week.

Post Surgery Follow Up

After about one week of recovery, you will meet with your surgeon for a follow-up assessment that examines how your jaw is healing.

Anesthesia Options for a Comfortable Corrective Jaw Surgery Experience

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia creates a numb feeling in the particular area where it is administered. It allows the patient to remain conscious and aware while relieving discomfort. This form of anesthesia is commonly used for minor medical procedures.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative inhaled by patients to help alleviate anxiety. It doesn’t cause unconsciousness and is often used alongside local anesthesia.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is commonly used for moderate to extensive surgical procedures involving the mouth or face. This method consists of administering medication directly into the patient’s bloodstream. One of the typical side effects of this sedation is amnesia, which often results in patients not remembering the details of their procedure afterward.

What Our Patients are Saying

  • Go Above And Beyond

Mr. Michelle Zoccolillo and her staff are absolutely amazing! 10/10 I would recommend them. I had corrective jaw surgery (BSSO) and my entire experience with their team was amazing. Dr. Z is incredibly smart and she will go above and beyond to make sure her patients are at ease. Corrective jaw surgery is a pretty intense procedure and leading up to it, not only I was nervous but my entire family was anxious. She took time out of her schedule to consult and walked through the entire procedure, addressing all the concern my family and I had multiple times to make sure everyone was at ease. She is incredibly patient, caring, very confident in her abilities (which made me so much less anxious about the procedure). Even after the surgery she goes above and beyond to take care of her patients. Highly recommended them!

  • Perfect Combination

Look. It's simple. Oral surgery is not something you want to have. But if you need to have it done then come see Dr Danielle Gill. The place is clean. Dr Gill is kind, compassionate, and informative. I'm currently in Budapest with her learning advanced bone grafting from one of the masters in the field. She is smart and technically skilled. She is the perfect combination of book smart and street smart. I would drive 3 hours to see her and get my wisdom teeth out, or have a dental implant, or get my corrective jaw surgery.
    - Anish G.
  • Good People

My son had corrective surgery for his overbite & wisdom teeth extracted ... Dr Howell & the staff are wonderful! Our orthodontist & dentist highly recommended Dr Howell and now I know why ... when you know who your doctors would entrust their personal medical care to, that’s who I want to go to as well. First class facility, kind staff, top notch docs. Good people.
    - Leslie A.
  • Patient Care is Unmatched

I had the absolute best care imaginable from Dr. Pham after breaking my jaw and needing two complex jaw surgeries. Dr. Pham took the time to explain every step of the process, putting my mind at ease during what was one of the most stressful times in my life. He comes off more as a friend taking care of you than a doctor if that makes sense. I was always excited to see him and hear what the next step was for my jaw. After his procedures and my recent root canal my face is 100% back to normal. Couldn’t be more happy. The level of care and attention I received both before and after the surgeries was phenomenal. What truly stood out is how supported I felt throughout the entire recovery. Dr. Pham and his team went above and beyond, ensuring I had everything I needed to heal properly and quickly. Their compassion, professionalism, and dedication to patient care is unmatched. If you're looking for an oral surgeon who is both a master of their craft and genuinely cares about his patients, go to Dr. Pham. I can’t recommend him highly enough.
