What foods should you eat after having your wisdom teeth removed?

Choose soft foods and foods that require no chewing. Avoid eating crunchy foods.

Because wisdom teeth often only emerge partially from the gums or grow in at crooked angles, many young people will be required to have them removed by an oral surgeon.

After the procedure, the patient’s mouth or jaw will likely be tender for a few days. To maximize comfort and healing during this recovery period, we recommend planning a diet around the following soft foods that require no chewing.

Foods to Eat

  • Milkshakes
  • Ice Cream
  • Smoothies
  • Jell-O
  • Pudding
  • Applesauce
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Pureed Vegetables
  • Yogurt

Beware the temperature of all foods. Anesthesia used during surgery may cover up the burning caused by eating foods that are too hot.

These foods should be eaten with a spoon and NEVER a straw. Using a straw could cause “dry sockets” and delay the healing process.

It’s also important to note that there are some foods that should not be eaten after wisdom tooth surgery. The following foods can irritate, cause pain or may cause the mouth to heal more slowly.

Foods to Avoid

  • Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Seeds
  • Crunchy foods
  • Chewy candies
  • Acidic Fruits
  • Carbonated Drinks

Because everyone and their recovery times are different, be sure to strictly follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor during check-out.
