Collagen, a protein found throughout the body and especially in the skin, breaks down as we age. Collagen is important for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. While many facial treatments inject collagen into the skin, microneedling stimulates your body’s natural production of collagen.
Microneedling works by using a sterile, handheld device that creates microscopic punctures when rolled over the skin. These micro-punctures on the top layer of the skin encourage the body to produce more of its own collagen to heal itself and do not leave any permanent scarring. While the treatment is not overly painful, a numbing gel containing 14% lidocaine is applied to the face beforehand.
Microneedling can be used to treat several skin conditions:
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven tone and texture
- Mild rosacea
A series of 4–6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart is recommended to achieve the most benefits, with results lasting 6–8 months after their last treatment.
Patients who receive microneedling treatments experience:
- Smoother skin
- Reduction in pigmentation
- Brighter-looking skin
- Improvement in elasticity
