Botulinum Toxins

Botulinum Toxins

Our skin’s elasticity and firmness naturally diminish with age, and fine lines and wrinkles appear. Thankfully, there are several minimally invasive treatment options to reduce the signs of aging and restore a more youthful appearance.

BOTOX is a popular treatment proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.

The active ingredient in BOTOX is onabotulinumtoxinA; other ingredients include human albumin and sodium chloride. After receiving FDA approval in 1989, BOTOX quickly became a recognized brand and is used for several medical and esthetic treatments today. Patients love BOTOX because it allows them to retain expressive facial movement while achieving a refreshed appearance. BOTOX may also be used on other areas of the body.

  • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles
  • Resume normal activities right away
  • Long-lasting results
  • Retain natural facial expressions

It takes about 10 minutes to receive a BOTOX treatment. A small needle is used to inject the serum into the facial muscles. Since the needle is so small, sedation and local anesthetic are not used; however, to enhance patient comfort, a topical anesthetic or ice pack may be applied before treatment. The number of injections depends on the size of the area and desired result.

The full results of the treatment may take up to 2 weeks and last about 4 months. For most patients, repeat treatments every 3 or 4 months is recommended, with longer-lasting results after subsequent treatments.

Similar to BOTOX, Dysport reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while keeping natural expression in the face. Dysport is most commonly used to smooth the appearance of lines between the eyebrows.

Since the active ingredient is Dysport is onabotulinumtoxinA, the treatment temporarily paralyzes specific muscles while allowing the rest of the facial expressions to move naturally. With a Dysport treatment, one injection is placed into five targeted points between and above the eyebrows. The needle used is very fine, so sedation and local anesthetic are not used; however, a topical anesthetic or ice pack may be applied prior to treatment. Each treatment takes between 10 and 20 minutes, and results last up to 4 months.

Most patients report noticeable improvement within 2 or 3 days after treatment.

Another type of botulinum treatment, Xeomin reduces the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Like BOTOX and Dysport, Xeomin’s active ingredient is onabotulinumtoxinA but has been formulated as a purified protein.

Xeomin allows for the reduced appearance of frown lines between the eyebrows while keeping the rest of the face naturally expressive.

Most patients report noticeable improvement with 5 days of treatment, with results lasting up to 4 months.
