Christopher Abernathy, DMD

Dr. Christopher Abernathy was born and raised in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He attended East Carolina University where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Dr. Abernathy continued his education at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. During his time there, he was awarded the Hunt Scholarship for academic excellence, as well as the Tufts University Outstanding Senior Award and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Dental Student Award for outstanding achievement and performance in undergraduate Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Abernathy spent much of his free time volunteering for various free clinics and outreach programs in Boston and the surrounding suburbs.

Dr. Abernathy completed his Internship at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, New York. He then went on to complete his four-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He had the honor of being named Administrative Chief Resident during his final year of training.

Professional Interests

Dr. Abernathy has extensive training in third molar (wisdom tooth) removal surgery, complex dental implant and bone grafting surgery, anesthesia, corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery), facial trauma, head and neck pathology, reconstructive surgery, and facial cosmetic surgery.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, Dr. Abernathy enjoys spending time with his wife Josie as well as the outdoors. He is an avid snowboarder, enjoys traveling, and enjoys global outreach surgery. He was awarded the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons’ Humanitarian Award in 2019 for his various outreach endeavors.
